Biennial General Meeting - Programme in Manchester, United Kingdom
5th and 6th May 2015
The CDA is pleased to announce the programme for its Biennial General Meeting, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 May 2015 in Manchester.
Tuesday 5 May will see the Business Meeting, with reports from the current Executive Committee and the election and installation of the new Executive for 2015-2017. A couple of changes to the CDA’s constitution will also be on the agenda. (see attachements 1, 2 and 3). The Business Meeting is open to representatives of national dental associations in the Commonwealth.
Wednesday 6 May is an all-day workshop on the theme 'Supporting vulnerable people and their carers'. We are pleased to welcome speakers from the UK and from Commonwealth countries to present on current projects, issues and advice on this subject.
The workshop is open to all interested; there is no charge, although we would ask for contributions to catering costs. The programme is outlined in the attachment.

Biennial General Meeting in Manchester, United Kingdom

The CDA is pleased to announce that its next Biennial General Meeting will be held on 5 and 6 May 2015 in Manchester, United Kingdom.
The meeting will consist of the Business Meeting which will include the election of officers and a look at the CDA’s strategy and activity, and a one-day workshop on the subject of Supporting vulnerable people and their carers. The programme will be available here soon.
In the meantime, the CDA has invited member associations to consider nominating candidates for election.
Some limited sponsorship for attendees from Commonwealth countries is available. The details and deadlines for applications are outlined in the attached documents.

Regional Workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa
The CDA is pleased to announce its latest workshop on the theme Oral Healthcare for Older People. The event will take place on 22-23 November in Johannesburg, South Africa at 54 On Bath, a boutique hotel in Johannesburg's suburb of Rosebank. A leaflet about the event can be seen below. It will include both local speakers and also speakers who will join the event through a weblink, in keeping with the CDA's new strategy to make more use of online learning opportunities through our collaboration with Healthcare Learning: Smile-On.
Financial support for attendance will be available to some delegates. The leaflet provides relevant information. Those interested in obtaining funding are advised to get in touch with the CDA office as soon as possible at firstname.lastname@example.org.

CDA Triennial General Meeting (in Cape Town)

The CDA is pleased to announce its 7th Triennial Meeting, to be held in Cape Town, South Africa, on Friday and Saturday November 2nd/3rd 2012. The meeting will be run in association with the South African Dental Association's Annual Congress, which will run from November 1st to 3rd 2012.
Oral health and an ageing population - the Challenge

This workshop, taking place during the Triennial Meeting and the SADA Conference, will consider the demographical changes in the world’s older population, explore the general effects of ageing on oral health, consider the effects of disability on oral health in older people and learn about some of the global initiatives being undertaken in relation to oral health and older people.

The Malaysian Dental Association hosted an International Scientific Conference & Trade Exhibition and their 69th Annual General Meeting, in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, on May 24th to 28th 2012.
"Bridging Technologies: Past, Present and Future"
During this event, the Commonwealth Dental Association ran a half-day workshop entitled:
"Transfer of Technologies Amongst Commonwealth Countries (Prevention, Promotion, Curative and Rehabilitative)".
The joint MDA/CDA event was formally opened by a state junior minister, representing the Chief Minister of Sarawak.
Speeches were also made by several other dignitaries present. In his opening speech, President of the CDA, Hilary Cooray, thanked the Commonwealth Foundation and the MDA for making the event possible.
The national associations of the following countries were represented at the CDA workshop: Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nigeria, the Seychelles, South Africa and Singapore. In all, there were 28 delegates at the workshop, including 10 sponsored by the Commonwealth Foundation.
May 19th 2012
A meeting of the CHPA took place immediately before the Annual Meeting of Commonwealth Health Ministers, in Geneva. Unfortunately nobody from the CDA was able to attend.
November 22nd to 25th 2011
The Commonwealth Dental Association in collaboration with the Barbados Dental Association, held a workshop on "Education, Abuse, Neglect and the Oral Care Practitioner". The meeting was held in Barbados, at the Accra Beach Hotel in November 2011 and was organised by Dr Victor Eastmond of Caribbean Dental Program Inc. assisted by Dr Anthony Kravitz, Treasurer of the CDA.
The use of restorative materials in a resource limited setting, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria

There were over 80 participants, including 6 delegates from Commonwealth Countries outside Nigeria; England, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana. The program for the two-day event comprised of plenary and working group sessions.

The 6th Triennial Meeting of the Commonwealth Dental Association (CDA) took place at the Suntec International Conference Centre, Singapore on 5th September 2009.
CDA-Bridge2Aid Joint Workshop on Urgent Oral Treatment, Mwanza, Tanzania

Dr Ian Wilson, Chief Executive of Bridge2Aid (B2A) thanked delegates not only for their attendance and their commitment to the delivery of oral health services in their professional lives. Each attendee brought different experience and whilst there was acceptance that there is no perfect model to address the issue of provision of emergency oral health services, through sharing different needs and delivering a supportive environment in which we can learn, it was hoped that we could develop a model that would better support the communities in pain and help make a difference.
The role of health workers in disaster management – Workshop, Sydney Australia

It is the finding of this workshop, as supported by best practice internationally, that oral health workers in disaster management are considered to be at the vanguard in assisting authorities in identifying deceased people. Lobbying for government support, in all countries, to recognise the importance of the oral health worker to take their rightful position in the disaster management role in assisting authorities in identifying deceased is imperative.
Planning for Oral Health in the Pacific Region

A meeting of commonwealth countries in Suva, Fiji was the highlight in the oral health calendar in the Pacific region for 2005. Oral health is regarded a low priority in the health sector, therefore, the meeting was an opportune time for representatives from 10 national dental associations in the region to emphasize the mounting oral health problems. Countries represented at the meeting were Fiji, Australia, Samoa, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Cook Islands, Kiribati and Tuvalu.
FDI/WHO Planning Conference for Oral Health in the African region - Nairobi, Kenya
April 14th to 16th 2004
The FDI/WHO Planning Conference for Oral Health in the African Region took place in Nairobi, Kenya. Participants included Health Ministers, Directors of Service, Responsible Officers for Health Budgets within the Ministries of Finance, Chief Dental Officers, Representatives of National Dental Associations, Academia and the dental industry.
